Andrew Muir (Dr)
Dr Andrew Muir is CEO of both Wilderness Foundation Africa and Wilderness Foundation Global. He is one of South Africa’s most influential conservationists and social entrepreneurs. Andrew has regularly been nationally and internationally recognized for his success in integrating conservation programmes with social and development interventions.
Andrew was mentored by conservation icon Dr Ian Player for 13 years and took over his legacy in the management of the various organisations that he had founded, including the world-famous Wilderness Leadership School and Wilderness Foundation.
Andrew obtained a Master’s Degree in Environment and Development from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in 2000, and a Degree of Doctor Social Science (honoris causa) from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in 2014. He is a specialist in protected area expansion and management; sustainable and eco-tourism development; advocacy; youth and community development.
Andrew sits on the Boards of various conservation and business organisations in South Africa as well as globally. These include amongst others Rolex Laureate for Enterprise; a Schwab Foundation Fellow of the World Economic Forum; Trustee of International Conservation Caucus Foundation (USA); Associate Gaia Foundation (UK); and President of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber (RSA).
Over the years Andrew has received many awards, including; Environmentalist of the Year – 2007, SANParks Kudu Award – 2007, Rolex Laureate – International Rolex Award for Enterprise – 2008, Citizen of the Year – EP Herald – 2008, World Economic Forum, Social Entreprenuer for Africa 2012, and many more.
