A wise person knows that there is something to be learned from everyone.

This was certainly the case on Friday, 26 July 2019, when the Umzi Wethu Conservation students spent a day at the Ekuphumleni Retirement Village and Creche. An important component of the training given to all Umzi Wethu students is the lesson of giving back. Each intake of students choose a CSI project and spend a day completing this activity. The current Umzi Wethu Conservation students chose the Ekuphumleni Retirement Village and Creche located in Kwazakele, Port Elizabeth.

We were blessed to receive sponsorships from Spar Eastern Cape and Zonwabise Resort Holdings in order to broaden our offering to the elderly and young children. The day was packed with activities, with the Umzi Wethu students transforming the gardens by planting vegetable seeds and succulent plants, cleaning windows at the residence, taking the pensioners for walks, and conducting make-overs for both the Grannies & Grandpa's, who were left feeling like celebrities.

The young children at the Qhamani Creche were also treated with singing and games.

The day was concluded with an event in the Hall of the Retirement Village, with a full programme including a bible reading, speeches, dance, music and acting. Donations were handed over to the the Retirement Village and Creche by Mr Magxwalisa of Spar EC.
