EXPERIENCE WILDERNESS

A chance to exist for a period in the original , primitive atmosphere of wilderness;

to watch from a respectful distance the intimate lives of wild animals and to listen at night to the compelling sounds of the African bushveld..

Wilderness Leadership School Trails:

The Wilderness Leadership School is a non-governmental organisation whose principles and experience have been shaped over five decades of guiding exclusive trails in wilderness areas of South Africa.  Trailists will explore the African bush, may encounter wild game at close quarters, hear lions roar and experience camaraderie around a campfire.

Shamwari Wilderness Trails:

In November 2001, Shamwari set aside 16 % of their land, over 3,000 hectares (7,500 acres) as a wilderness area and are offering a 4 day wilderness trail programme. Four-day wilderness trails are run where two nights are spent in the bush with the first and last nights in the base camp. Your trail will be limited to 8 participants.

Wilderness Action Group:

The Wilderness Action Group promotes wilderness conservation, both regionally and internationally. It strives to highlight the importance, the values, and uniqueness of African wilderness and the need to protect it for present and future generations. It advocates that wilderness areas can and should be designated on public, communal, and private land throughout southern Africa and further a field.

The Freedom Challenge:

The Freedom Challenge is an initiative to establish and manage the Freedom Trail, a mountain bike trail across South Africa.  Focused on wilderness and conservation areas the trail, which is open to the public, currently runs for 2300 kilometers from Pietermaritzburg, over the Maloti Drakensberg, across the Karoo, up the Baviaanskloof and alongside the Swartberg before cutting across the Klein Karoo to Cape Town.  Designed to be ridden without support vehicles, fully serviced accommodation is provided in villages, national parks and nature reserves, on farms and in small towns.  Running through biophysically varied landscape the trail offers an opportunity to enjoy the remoteness and scenic splendour of rural South Africa whilst experiencing an insight into the development of life on earth, the history of human settlement of the countryside, and the diversity of its existing cultures.
