PARTNERSHIPS & AFFILIATIONS

A clear strength of the Wilderness Foundation is its ability to network across interest groups.  Only together can we integrate the need for development with conservation of the environment, and bring into full play the value of wilderness and wildlands as a benchmark for original natural systems and human impact.

An affiliate of the Wilderness Foundation, FOBWA is a public support and interest group, formed specifically around the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area.  Its members volunteer their time to assist the conservation agencies with activities in the kloof; ranging from alien-clearing work parties, to an honorary ranger corps. The group also raises public awareness of the area via public meetings, membership, and newsletters.

Shamwari Game Reserve:

Together with Shamwari the WF is playing a key role in the overall management of the first ever private wilderness area in Africa including being instrumental in the training of wilderness guides and the setting up of trails. The WF has a legal servitude over the wilderness area drafted in such a way that the use of the area as wilderness is secured.

South African National Parks:  (SANParks)

SANParks and the Wilderness Foundation have a formal relationship with their joint venture project - Imbewu youth programme, which is operated in each of SANParks operational regions.  This project forms an integral part of their environmental education initiative and support them in making national parks the pride and joy of all South Africans.

The WILD Foundation (USA):

The WILD Foundation was established by in the United States in 1974 by Dr Ian Player, under the legal name International Wilderness Leadership Foundation, with the help of Dan Galbreath (then owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates), Ed Gott ( US Steel),  Harry Tennison (Gamecoin), Bob Cleaves and Virginia Kraft.   Initially the focus of the organisation was South Africa.  The focus then became more international when WILD organised the 1977 and 1980 World Wilderness Congresses in Johannesburg, South Africa and Cairns, Australia.

Vance Martin, WILDs President,  starting working with Dr Player in 1980 at the 2nd WWC, assumed responsibility for the organization shortly therefafter, and in 1985 re-branded it to The WILD Foundation.  Its flagship project is the World Wilderness Congress, now the world's longest-running, public environmental forum, having convened eight times around the world. Its projects integrate wilderness conservation with the needs of human communities, and are in three program areas: Wilderness Policy and Management; Wilderness Communications and Media; and Local Action Projects.

The Wilderness Foundation (UK):

An NGO that supports conservation projects throughout KwaZulu Natal.  Its activities are grouped into two programmes - a threatened species conservation programme and a conservation SPACE programme.  Wilderness Foundation and Wildlands Trust are founder members of the Living Lakes network representing Lake St Lucia and South Africa.

World Wildlife Fund - South Africa:  (WWF-SA)

The Wilderness Foundation has a long association with WWF-SA.  This has included working together to purchase land incorporated within the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area (1989/1990).  In recent times involvement with two WWF-SA associated trusts - the Table Mountain Fund for the Pride project for five years and a four year commitment with the Nedbank Green Trust for the Opinion Leader Programme - both of which have been consistently effective.
