A key element of the Umzi Wethu course at the Youth Development Programme is the principle of giving back, and each group of Umzi Wethu students are given a chance to give back to the community during their training. The Umzi 23 students chose to spend a day with Grade 7 pupils at a local primary school in the Eastern Cape as their CSI project.

The theme of discussions during the day was HIV / AIDS.  Students were split into groups and the following topics were addressed:

  • Facts / stats on HIV / AIDS
  • Infections – how do you get HIV /AIDS
  • Peer Pressure
  • Empowerment
Students shared their life journeys, resulting in many bonds being created amongst the youth. The Umzi Wethu students handed out sanitary towels to the young female pupils, using the opportunity to discuss issues on puberty and life choices. Thereafter, the students prepared an area for vegetable planting and carrots, beetroot, spinach and cabbage were planted.
